Finding Strength in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu: The Journey of Chef Nathan Green

Nathan Green, an esteemed chef based in Hong Kong, has discovered a multitude of benefits beyond physical fitness through his involvement in Brazilian jiu-jitsu (BJJ). Initially seeking to restore his fitness and shed 21kg in a year, Green uncovered a deeper purpose in the sport as it provided him with mental support and structure during a particularly challenging phase in his life.

On December 11, Green will embark on a new endeavour as he transitions from donning traditional chef whites to rash guards for a Brazilian jiu-jitsu prize fight. Organized by 4 Stripes, the friendly match will witness Green competing against his friend and opponent, Oliver Welch, in an ultra heavyweight fight. Amidst the anticipation surrounding the event, Green emphasizes that Brazilian jiu-jitsu encompasses more than just physical competition.

In a recent interview, Green expressed how the sport has significantly impacted his life. “Our industry is enduring a very tumultuous period,” he stated, alluding to the difficulties faced by Hong Kong’s bar and restaurant scene. “It’s exceedingly challenging to formulate plans. I have been elated to witness several chefs and restaurateurs embracing jiu-jitsu, and I have been endeavoring to encourage some of my acquaintances to join me at the gym because everyone is under immense stress, and training serves as a tremendous release.”

For Green, the discipline and structure offered by Brazilian jiu-jitsu proved imperative for his mental well-being. Confronting setbacks due to injuries sustained during boxing, Green found himself grappling with physical and mental struggles. It was during this arduous period that his jiu-jitsu instructors, Rodrigo Caporal and Nosh Khan, urged him to return to the sport, extending much-needed mentorship and encouragement.

As he continued his training, Green uncovered the significance of camaraderie within the jiu-jitsu community as an equally pivotal aspect of the sport. “The most crucial aspect of jiu-jitsu training isn’t merely the physical aspect,” he highlighted. “It’s also the camaraderie and mental sharpness that the training fosters.” His new gym and dedicated training regimen underscored the role of jiu-jitsu in providing support and structure during trying times.

Ultimately, Green underscored that the sport had transcended mere physical fitness. “It’s an exquisite sport because you face adversity daily, and as you improve, your training partner also progresses,” he remarked. “I eagerly anticipate facing Ollie and evaluating our performance against each other.”

In summation, Green’s journey with Brazilian jiu-jitsu epitomizes how the sport extends beyond physical fitness, becoming a source of mental fortitude and community. As he prepares for his imminent challenge, it is evident that Brazilian jiu-jitsu has profoundly impacted his life, offering not only a means to stay in shape, but also a wellspring of resilience and support during trying times.
