The recent closure of Toronto Arrows and New York Ironworkers, the 2022 Major League Rugby champions, has presented significant challenges for Major League Rugby. With Rugby New York folding just ahead of the 2024 MLR season, the league now stands at only 11 teams, causing concern for its future.
According to Americas Rugby News, the closure of Rugby New York is attributed to ownership and financial difficulties, further compounding the league’s challenges following Toronto Arrows’ exit. This reduction in teams has raised doubts about the MLR’s longevity.
In response to the withdrawal of New York Ironworkers, CEO Nic Benson expressed regret and acknowledged the team’s contributions to rugby in the U.S. and New York, recognizing the highly competitive market. As the league navigates through the wind-down process, there are uncertainties surrounding the dispersal of players from both Rugby New York and the Toronto Arrows.
Established in 2018, Rugby New York faced obstacles with changes in ownership and home venues throughout its existence. The club’s final head coach was James Semple, and its last captain was Nate Brakeley, who recently retired from both club rugby and international duty with the United States.
The closure of Rugby New York leaves the MLR with the fewest number of teams since the end of the 2019 season, posing a significant setback for a league that had expanded to 12 teams ahead of the 2020 season, reaching a maximum of 13 teams in 2022.
Despite these challenges, the league remains steadfast in its commitment to the upcoming 2024 season. The expansion Miami Sharks are still set to join the league, with plans for a Los Angeles franchise also underway. MLR CEO Benson remains confident in the league’s future, emphasizing its dedication to growth and expressing anticipation for the upcoming season.
As North America prepares to host the Rugby World Cup in 2031, the MLR is resolute in overcoming its current challenges and continuing to bolster the sport’s global success.
