The basketball season is on the brink of commencing, and the Renville County West boys’ basketball team, commonly referred to as the Jaguars, is focused on enhancing their speed for the upcoming season to remain competitive.
In spite of facing a scarcity of size, the Jaguars, under the leadership of head coach Matt Huhnerkoch and assistants Rich Schrupp and Brady Holwerda, are committed to transforming this disadvantage into an advantage. Following a 4-23 overall record and 3-15 standing in the Camden Conference in the previous season, the team is determined to make a stronger comeback this year.
Having bid farewell to a number of graduating players, including Isaac Haen and Adam Schrupp, who played pivotal roles within the team, the Jaguars are looking to fill the void with the skills of junior Ryan Schrupp and senior guard Jack Wertish, who are anticipated to lead the team this season.
Ryan Schrupp, an All-Camden Conference selection, exhibited exceptional performance in the preceding season. The 6-1 guard averaged 15.2 points, 4.4 rebounds, 2.7 steals, and 2.2 assists per game, highlighting his versatility on the court. Coach Huhnerkoch commended him, describing him as a ‘do it all’ player, serving as both an offensive asset and one of the premier defensive players in the conference.
Furthermore, the Jaguars have their sights set on 6-0 junior guard Jacob Valdovinos and 6-3 freshman forward Jon Driggs. Valdovinos demonstrated his swiftness and adept shooting abilities, while Driggs exhibited considerable promise during his time playing varsity last season as an eighth-grader.
The team is bracing itself for a challenging schedule ahead, with a plethora of games lined up, affording them ample opportunities to exhibit their skills and contend with other formidable teams. From December 4th to February 23rd, the Jaguars will be facing an array of opponents, striving to make an impact in every game.
Equipped with a blend of seasoned players and emerging talents, the RCW Jaguars are poised for an enthralling season, prepared to confront challenges head-on and exhibit their utmost effort on the court.
