Tough Loss for Stevens Women’s Basketball Team Against Colby

The women’s basketball team of Stevens Institute of Technology suffered a challenging defeat against Colby last Saturday, with a final score of 74-51. Despite a standout performance by junior Lucy Alberici, who scored a total of 20 points and grabbed six rebounds, the Ducks were unable to secure a victory and are now on a disappointing three-game losing streak. This loss also marks their second consecutive defeat on home ground, bringing their record to 2-2 in Hoboken. With this defeat, the team’s all-time record against Colby stands at 0-2. On the other hand, the Mules improved to 7-3 for the season.

The game had a promising start for Stevens, with a 10-4 run that gave them an early lead of six points. Alberici and sophomore Leyla Castro were strong contributors during this initial phase of the game, each scoring four points. However, Colby quickly closed the gap and the first quarter ended with both teams tied at 15 points. The Mules then took control in the second quarter and managed to maintain a significant lead, ending the first half with a score of 38-27 in their favor.

In the second half, Colby continued to dominate, going on an 8-0 run and extending their lead even further. Despite an effort by Stevens to narrow the gap, they struggled to make field goals and had to rely on free throws to score points. Alberici, Loffredo, and first-year player Kay Decker made valiant efforts, but it wasn’t enough to turn the tide in their favour. As the game entered its final stages, Colby steadily widened the point difference, ultimately securing a 23-point victory over the Ducks.

Top performers for Stevens included Alberici, who not only scored 20 points but also contributed with one block, one steal, and one assist. Loffredo also made a significant impact with 14 points and six rebounds, while Castro added eight points, six rebounds, and three blocks. Decker stood out with a team-high nine rebounds.

Looking at the opponent’s performance, Kate Olenik led the game in points with 24, alongside six rebounds and three steals. Amelia Hanscom and Lydia Mordarski also made notable contributions to Colby’s victory.

Following this defeat, the Ducks are now gearing up for the upcoming Stevens Women’s Basketball Holiday Tournament, scheduled for December 29-30.
