A Celebration of 30 Years: Scottish Tang Soo Do Championships in Moray

Scotland Tang Soo Do recently commemorated its 30th anniversary by hosting the Scottish Championships event at the Lossiemouth Sports and Community Centre. The club, originally established at RAF Kinloss and Forres, has expanded to include clubs in various locations, including Forres, Hopeman, Elgin, Keith, Huntly, Inverness, Thurso, Alness, and Edinburgh.

Founded in 1993 by Master Jan De-Vry, the club has played a crucial role in introducing the Korean martial art of Tang Soo-Do, which is rooted in karate, to a diverse range of students across northern Scotland. Many individuals have progressed from beginner level to become instructors and beyond within the club.

The recent Scottish Championships event brought together approximately 120 competitors from across the country in Moray to display their martial arts abilities. Esteemed figures in the martial arts community, such as Grandmaster Robert Salm, Grandmaster Ashok Kumar, and Master Geoff Keerie, attended the event. The day concluded with a celebratory party at the Elgin City Football Club.

Championship director Michelle Raisborough, who leads Evolution Martial Arts in Lossiemouth, acknowledged the significant contributions of key individuals within the Scotland Tang Soo Do community. Master Jan De-Vry and Master Kelly O’Connor were presented with glass awards in appreciation of their dedication to Tang Soo-Do in Scotland. Additionally, club heads received glass plaques as a token of gratitude for their ongoing support.

During the competition, athletes ranging from eight to 60 years old participated in 68 different categories, including disciplines such as Hyungs, Weapons Hyungs, and sparring. The event showcased remarkable displays of martial arts techniques and skills, culminating in an impressive showing by the competitors in the Masters and Black Belt categories.
