Former Reading forward Dave Kitson has issued an appeal to the supporters of the Royals to cease their protests involving the use of tennis balls, expressing his belief that it is negatively impacting the younger players within the team. Following Reading’s recent 1-1 draw against local rivals Oxford United, Kitson has voiced his concerns about the protests and their potential to hinder the development of the team’s emerging talents.
In an interview with BBC Radio Berkshire, Kitson delivered a direct message to the fans, stating, “The point has been made. All you are doing is disrupting these young players who are attempting to establish themselves and perform.” His remarks come in response to the ongoing protests staged by Reading fans against the club’s owner, Dai Yongge, which have included a recent demonstration at the Houses of Parliament and the English Football League headquarters.
In addition to addressing the protests, Kitson also expressed dissatisfaction with the effort and commitment shown by certain Reading players during the match against Oxford United. Observing that several players appeared to lack the necessary motivation and determination, he remarked, “I’m not convinced that the sight of four Reading players lying on their backs at the end and pretending they gave their all was warranted, I found it to be embarrassing.”
Furthermore, Kitson highlighted what he perceived as deficiencies in the team’s performance, describing it as “ineffective” and criticising the lack of offensive momentum. He underscored the significance of exertion and determination in securing victories, stating, “I am familiar with what it takes to win football matches, I am aware of the effort required. If you are fatigued after that match, you are not in shape, it’s as simple as that.”
In contrast, Reading manager Ruben Selles offered a divergent viewpoint on the team’s performance, expressing contentment with their endeavours. Selles acknowledged the challenges presented by the opposition but praised his players for their competitiveness and ability to control pivotal moments of the game.
Notwithstanding their efforts, Reading finds themselves positioned second-bottom in League One, trailing by a four-point margin from safety. The team’s on-field challenges are compounded by the discontent among the fanbase, intensifying the complexities of the situation.
