The Globe and Mail’s Coverage of Hockey Canada Recognized for International Journalism Award

The outstanding investigative work conducted by The Globe and Mail, which uncovered Hockey Canada’s misappropriation of children’s hockey registration fees to secretly settle sexual-assault allegations, has earned the publication a place as a finalist for one of the most prestigious international journalism awards. The Fetisov Journalism Award, established to honour impactful stories that promote universal human values, has shortlisted The Globe for its comprehensive investigation into the issue. Founded by Gleb Fetisov, the awards carry a total prize fund of $807,000 and recognise stories that exemplify values such as honesty, justice, courage, and nobility.

The Hockey Canada investigation, which resulted in an eight-article series, has led to The Globe and Mail team of Grant Robertson, Colin Freeze, Robyn Doolittle, Susan Krashinsky Robertson, and Joe Friesen being considered for the Outstanding Investigative Reporting category of the Fetisov prize. Their work was further validated by their receipt of the Michener Award, the highest journalism prize in Canada.

Stuart Laidlaw, a former Canadian journalist and member of the FJA expert council, expressed delight at seeing a Canadian entry on the shortlist, stating that Canadian journalists deserve recognition alongside their global counterparts. Alvin Ntibinyane, another Canadian council member, singled out The Globe’s Hockey Canada series as one of the best submissions due to its significant impact and the reporters’ effort to expose the issues within Hockey Canada.

The Fetisov Journalism Awards received 400 entries from 96 countries this year, with the 26 shortlisted entries representing journalists from over 20 countries. In addition to The Globe’s nomination, stories on women’s struggles, displacement, labour exploitation, and migration were also among the shortlisted entries, highlighting the diverse and impactful nature of journalism across the globe.

The winners of the Fetisov Journalism Awards will be announced at the fifth annual ceremony in April 2024.
