Abuse towards Chelsea’s Lauren James branded “disgusting” by Emma Hayes

Chelsea manager Emma Hayes has come forward to denounce the online abuse aimed at forward Lauren James, deeming the treatment as “disgusting” and expressing concern for the player’s mental wellbeing.

The abuse stemmed from James’ off-the-ball challenge on Arsenal’s Lia Walti during Chelsea’s 4-1 defeat to the Gunners on Sunday. Despite receiving a yellow card for the challenge, the situation has led to a deluge of criticism and online harassment targeted at James.

Hayes, who suspects that the abuse is racially motivated, condemned the mistreatment of the young player, particularly when compared to the treatment of other players in similar situations.

During a press conference on Wednesday, Hayes conveyed her dismay at the hostility directed at James. “I think it’s disgusting, the amount of abuse she has received from the public, the media, the press,” the Chelsea manager stated. “We are talking about a young player here who, no question, is always working to learn in the background with bits and bobs. But some of the language that I’ve seen used to vilify her externally is unacceptable.”

Additionally, Hayes highlighted the disparity in the level of scrutiny faced by James compared to other players and pointed out that the mistreatment is compounded by external factors such as racial profiling.

The Chelsea manager also drew parallels between James and the experience of England men’s captain David Beckham, who faced widespread criticism and abuse after being sent off at the World Cup in 1998.

Hayes also mentioned that opposition players have been actively trying to get James sent off in every game since the World Cup, which has undoubtedly impacted the player’s mentality and overall performance on the field.

Recognising the detrimental effect of social media on the mental health of players, Hayes advised James and others to take a break from social platforms following controversial moments in games. The relentless and often vitriolic nature of social media has contributed significantly to the strain that James has been under.

In conclusion, the abuse and harassment aimed at Lauren James are unjust and unwarranted. The support and understanding of the public are crucial to counteracting the harmful impact of racial profiling and online bullying. It is essential for the football community to stand in solidarity with Lauren James, offering encouragement as she navigates the challenges of professional sports.
