Branford’s field hockey team commenced the 2023 season as the reigning Class M state champion, elevating the stakes for their customary schedule of games. While they did not secure the championship this year, their performance has positioned them for a robust comeback in 2024.
The Hornets achieved a regular-season record of 7-7-2 and secured an away victory at No. 3 Cheshire in the SCC Tournament before succumbing to Sacred Heart Academy in the semifinals. In the Class M State Tournament, they secured a 3-0 triumphant first-round performance at No. 8 Amity, ultimately exiting in the quarterfinals against Hand.
Reflecting on the season, Head Coach Pete Frye commended the team’s resilience and effort, especially in light of dealing with a short bench and competing in numerous high-stakes matches that extended into overtime. Despite not replicating their previous year’s success, the team faced formidable competition and demonstrated remarkable determination throughout.
One of the team’s notable achievements was defeating New Canaan in their inaugural game of the year, indicating their capacity to compete beyond their conference. Despite their youthful offensive lineup, with two sophomores and a freshman as starters in the forward position, the team remained competitive in every match, except for a 6-0 defeat against Wilton.
Freshman Jessica Radziunas emerged as the leading goal scorer, followed by sophomore Tate Jones and senior Mia d’Amuri. In goal, senior Julia Bozzi made an impressive 94 saves.
Looking forward to 2024, the team will confront the task of replacing key defensive players while assimilating new talent into the squad. Coach Frye expressed confidence in the team’s adaptability and underscored the potential of standout players such as Radziunas, Jones, and promising freshman Lilly Panuccio.
Frye also commended the senior class for their pivotal role in the team, leaving behind a legacy of excellence. He lauded them for their role model behaviour and contribution to the program’s ongoing development.
With their devoted coaching staff and a roster of talented players, the future appears promising for Branford’s field hockey team. As they regroup for the approaching season, there is no doubt they will continue to pursue success both on and off the field.
The regular season was a blend of victories, defeats, and draws, showcasing the team’s resilience and competitive spirit throughout.
To conclude, Branford’s field hockey team has displayed notable determination and resilience throughout the 2023 season. Despite falling short of their previous year’s success, the team’s performance and attitude have laid a strong foundation for the future. With a mix of seasoned players and promising new talent, the Hornets are poised for a triumphant return in 2024.
