The Babson United Rugby Club has once again demonstrated its prowess on the national stage by emerging victorious in the small college rugby national championship. The match was indeed exhilarating, showcasing the team’s unwavering determination and skill.
Competing against Wayne State, the Beavers found themselves in a challenging position with a 23-20 scoreline and only a few minutes remaining in the match. However, their resilience and steadfast spirit propelled them forward, ultimately securing a 27-23 victory. This triumph not only earned them the championship title but also solidified their position as one of the top rugby programs in the nation.
This victory represents Babson’s second national championship win of the year, following their success in the National Collegiate Rugby (NCR) Small College National 7s championship. While the 7s championship highlights a more fast-paced version of the game with seven players on each side, the recent title was achieved through the more traditional 15-player style of play.
The path to victory was undoubtedly challenging, as the Beavers demonstrated their dominance with a resounding 52-0 victory against Catholic University in the semifinals. However, it was their match against Wayne State that truly tested their skills and determination. Despite trailing at one point with a 17-6 scoreline, the Babson team rallied together and never wavered in their belief in their ability to turn the game around.
Head coach Carrick Pell’s unwavering faith in his players served as a driving force behind their success, and he remained confident even in the face of adversity. The team’s remarkable final drive showcased their resilience and teamwork, with their victory being likened to a blend of Tom Brady’s greatest comeback drive times ten.
Individual honours were also well-deserved, with fly-half Reed Santos being named the tournament’s MVP for his exceptional performance. Furthermore, Jack Byszio received the Heart and Soul award for exemplifying unwavering dedication and resilience throughout the season.
The team’s success can be attributed to their strong culture and sense of camaraderie, with a focus on unity and support both on and off the field. Despite the majority of players having little to no prior rugby experience, the team’s remarkable achievement reflects their diligence and commitment to mastering the game’s fundamentals.
As the team revels in the glory of their recent victory, it is clear that their unwavering spirit, teamwork, and dedication have truly set them apart. The triumph of the Babson United Rugby Club serves as a testament to the power of resilience, camaraderie, and unwavering determination in the face of adversity.
