With an unyielding passion for the sport, 18-year-old Ruairi McConville is thoroughly enjoying his time with the under-21s this season. Despite facing injuries last season, McConville has bounced back impressively, participating in 19 matches for the under-21s and under-18s.
Expressing his enthusiasm for the game, McConville stated, “It’s been great and I’ve wanted to play as many games as I can. I missed a fair bit of last year so I am trying to make up for that. I am enjoying every minute of training and the games and I am trying to put myself in the best position going forward.”
Demonstrating a commendable level of maturity, McConville has set his sights on achieving his future objectives, stating, “My main aim stay fit and play as many under-21s games as I can. I want to put myself in a good position come the end of the season and maybe go out on loan or push into the first team picture.”
Recognising the progress he has made at the international level, McConville views his transition to the under-21s as a significant achievement. He is also determined to emulate his teammates who have seamlessly transitioned to the first team, underscoring the strength of the pathway at the club.
Acknowledging the importance of role models within the club, McConville commented, “The most important thing is that young players are getting the chance and when those opportunities next come around, you have to make sure that it’s you.”
As the under-21s prepare to face Leicester City in Premier League 2, McConville emphasised the unity and camaraderie within the group, highlighting its pivotal role in elevating the team’s performance. He mentioned, “It shows on the pitch when we’re always backing and helping each other. It helps each of us get to where we want to be and achieve our goals.”
Indeed, McConville’s journey is a testament to the unwavering dedication and drive that young athletes possess, as they navigate through the ranks and strive for excellence in their respective careers.
