The 20th anniversary of the 2003 girls basketball state championship was recently commemorated by the Patriots during a game against Manistique. The event was attended by numerous players, coaches, and other members of the 2003 championship squad, making it a significant and memorable day for all involved.
The ceremony, which took place between the JV and varsity games, drew a large and enthusiastic crowd. The celebratory atmosphere was heightened by the Westwood JV team’s strong 43-4 victory, echoing the dominance displayed by the 2003 team in their own championship triumph. Coach Tom Hammar’s squad had achieved a resounding 62-27 win against Michigan Center in the Class C state championship game.
Reflecting on the importance of the occasion, Jake Skewis, NICE Schools athletic director, remarked, “Westwood High School opened its doors in 1974, and in the 49 years that have passed since, we’ve seen our share of success on the athletic courts and fields. However, we’ve only had one team that has earned the distinction of a state champion.”
The ceremony was an emotional affair, with Coach Hammar expressing his gratitude and affection for the team he had the privilege of leading. “I coached for 39 years in basketball and I loved every minute of it,” he said. “This group of young ladies was just a dream come true. Not only were they good, I mean great, basketball players, they were outstanding students and outstanding people. It was my privilege to be their coach.”
The legacy of the 2003 champions seems to have continued to inspire the current Westwood varsity squad, which secured a comfortable 66-41 victory over Manistique, bringing their record to 2-1. Senior Megan Marta notably emerged as the leading scorer with what appeared to be more than 30 points.
