The Wisbech Rugby Club wishes to express a heartfelt tribute to Arturas by reinstating the iconic number 14 shirt in his memory. This emotional moment occurred during the team’s recent match against Bury St Edmunds 2nd XV, serving as a poignant gesture to conclude the year.
Regrettably, the match resulted in a league defeat for Wisbech, as they encountered a formidable Bury St Edmunds 2nd XV on their home ground. Throughout the game, the number 14 shirt, emblazoned with the words “Remembering Arturas” above the number, served as a poignant reminder of the beloved individual whose memory continues to resonate within the club and its community.
The poignant ceremony involved Arturas’s partner, Jolita KiseliovaitÄ—, graciously presenting the shirt bearing his name to the team. Furthermore, identical number 14 shirts were also generously given to Jolita and her three-year-old son, Emilijus, as a token of remembrance and support from the Wisbech Rugby Club.
Despite the loss, the match showcased moments of admirable resilience from the Wisbech team. The well-prepared Bury squad proved to be a formidable opponent, exhibiting exceptional ball movement and securing four impressive tries in the first half. Nevertheless, Wisbech demonstrated commendable determination, particularly in the second half, as they endeavored to penetrate the opposing team’s steadfast defense.
Captain Jack Malkin conveyed the team’s disappointment at the loss, acknowledging that while they possess the ability, belief in their potential to challenge teams like Bury remains a current obstacle. Nonetheless, he expressed optimism for the future, stating, “It will come.”
One standout moment from the match was the stellar performance of Wisbech’s emerging talent, Ari Baghdouyan, who was rightfully bestowed with the man-of-the-match accolade. His unwavering defensive prowess and relentless efforts on the field did not go unnoticed, earning him well-deserved recognition from both teammates and fans alike.
Looking ahead, Wisbech Rugby Club is prepared to continue their demanding 2023/24 league campaign with their next match scheduled for January 6th, where they will confront Shelford in what promises to be another intense showdown.
As the club perseveres in their pursuits on the field, the reintroduction of the number 14 shirt in honour of Arturas serves as a touching testament to the profound impact he continues to have on the Wisbech Rugby Club. This poignant tribute serves as a symbol of remembrance, reflecting the enduring spirit that unites the club and its community.
