At the age of 51, the former NHL star Jaromir Jagr has once again proven his resilience by making his season debut for the Kladno Knights, a team in Czechia which he owns. This signifies the beginning of Jagr’s 36th professional hockey season, demonstrating his enduring talent and passion for the sport.
During the game against Czech Extraliga-leading Pardubice, Jagr played a commendable 13 minutes and 44 seconds, contributing an assist in a hard-fought 4-3 loss for the Knights. Despite facing a challenging start that resulted in a 3-0 deficit, Jagr’s presence on the ice helped his team stage a comeback and level the game. Unfortunately, Pardubice managed to secure a short-handed goal, ultimately clinching the victory.
Jagr’s illustrious career dates back to 1988-89 when he made his professional debut for Kladno before being drafted by the Pittsburgh Penguins as the No. 5 pick in the 1990 NHL Draft. Throughout his remarkable career in the NHL, Jagr achieved an impressive 1,921 career points, solidifying his name as second on the all-time points list, just behind Wayne Gretzky.
The Pittsburgh Penguins have announced plans to retire Jagr’s No. 68 jersey in a ceremony scheduled for Feb. 18, recognizing his significant contributions to the team. Notably, Jagr played a pivotal role in the Penguins’ consecutive Stanley Cup victories in 1991 and 1992, showcasing his exceptional skill alongside fellow legend Mario Lemieux.
Following his tenure with the Penguins, Jagr was traded to the Washington Capitals in 2001, subsequently signing a lucrative seven-year, $77 million contract with the team. Although his time with the Capitals did not reach the heights that were hoped for, Jagr’s career continued to flourish. He later joined the New York Rangers in 2004, where he enjoyed four successful seasons, tallying an impressive 124 goals and 195 assists.
Jagr’s journey also led him to the KHL for three seasons, before ultimately making a triumphant return to the NHL in 2011 with the Philadelphia Flyers. From there, he went on to play for the Boston Bruins, Calgary Flames, Dallas Stars, Florida Panthers, and New Jersey Devils, leaving an indelible mark on each team with his presence. Jagr’s illustrious NHL career came to a close on Dec. 31, 2017, as a member of the Flames.
Despite bidding farewell to the NHL, Jagr found his way back to Kladno in 2018, marking a poignant return to his roots. Since then, he has continued to make sporadic yet impactful appearances on the ice, demonstrating his unwavering passion for the sport and his enduring dedication to his local team.
