Dedicated Coach Wins Volunteer Award for Service to Minor Hockey

Mr. Joe Longo, a distinguished coach in Sault, has been bestowed with the Ontario Hockey Federation Sam Ciccolini Volunteer of the Year Award in recognition of his unwavering commitment to minor hockey. Mr. Longo expressed his surprise at being honored with this prestigious award, as he had not anticipated it. Nonetheless, he graciously accepted the recognition for his tireless efforts.

Accompanied by his wife, Mr. Longo was presented with the esteemed award at the OHF awards banquet. The OHF lauded Mr. Longo for his dedication to enriching the experiences of young hockey players and instilling in them the virtues of hard work, discipline, teamwork, and camaraderie. With over five decades of coaching experience, Mr. Longo has had a profound impact on the young athletes under his tutelage. Presently, he coaches alongside his brother and Chad Bouchard, devoting approximately 12 hours per week to coaching the U-5 Timbits Blue team in the Soo Pee Wee Hockey League and the U-13 house league LBMX team in the SPWHL. Mr. Longo’s dedication to coaching emanates from his genuine passion for the sport and the satisfaction derived from witnessing the growth and success of the children he has coached.

He now coaches his grandson, Logan, and it is worth noting that he met his wife, Wanda, at the rink many years ago.
