A Call for Responsible Fan Behaviour During Festive Football Matches

As we prepare for an exciting series of holiday football games, we support the message conveyed by the EFL and the wider football community.

The festive season traditionally brings families and friends together to enjoy the game, and as such, the FA, Premier League, and EFL are urging fans to demonstrate responsibility when attending matches.

In light of recent incidents at games, supporters are being reminded to express their passion for the game in a positive manner, ensuring that football matches remain safe and enjoyable for everyone.

It is imperative to stress that no one should be at risk when attending a football match. Stringent measures and penalties are in effect across all English football leagues to address dangerous and unlawful conduct within football stadiums, including discriminatory behaviour, pitch invasion, pyrotechnics, and throwing objects. Those who choose to engage in such behaviour should be aware that they could face automatic bans from clubs and legal action from the authorities.

The FA, Premier League, and EFL are dedicated to promoting the ‘Love Football. Protect the Game’ campaign, collaborating with clubs, law enforcement agencies, and relevant authorities to maintain safe matchday environments.

Trevor Birch, chief executive of the EFL, has stated, “The festive period is a highly anticipated part of the English football calendar, with thousands of supporters attending matches across the country. Regrettably, there have been several incidents in recent games, caused by a small minority of spectators, that have posed dangers and compromised the safety of everyone involved. We want supporters to foster a positive and supportive atmosphere and collaborate with clubs to eliminate behaviour that undermines the safety and enjoyment of others. Our sport is renowned for fans creating a passionate and emotional atmosphere, but it should not come at the expense of others’ safety and enjoyment. The football authorities, clubs, and law enforcement are united in their efforts to crack down on this unacceptable behaviour. Please respect the wishes of others to partake in the festive football in a secure and pleasant environment.”

It is essential for all football fans to recognise the significance of responsible behaviour while attending matches. By doing so, everyone can contribute to ensuring the safety and enjoyment of players, staff, and fellow supporters, thereby preserving the positive spirit of the beautiful game.
