Nick Kyrgios’ Quest for a Coach

Renowned Australian tennis star Nick Kyrgios has not consecutively engaged a long-term coach for the past seven years, a period which has been marked by turbulent experiences with various mentors. Notwithstanding this, he has achieved notable milestones in his career, including securing the Australian Open men’s doubles title and reaching the Wimbledon singles final in 2022.

Kyrgios embarked on his professional career in 2013 under the guidance of Desmond Tyson, a former tennis professional. Following his victory in the Australian Open junior boys title, he enlisted the services of Simon Rea, under whose tutelage he experienced a fruitful partnership culminating in a breakthrough performance at Wimbledon in 2014. However, Kyrgios opted to sever ties with Rea shortly after this notable achievement.

Throughout the years, the Australian has been observed to collaborate with a changing roster of coaches, including Todd Larkham and Josh Eagle. Regrettably, these alliances proved to be of short duration, with Eagle subsequently expressing that Kyrgios was deemed “uncoachable.”

In 2015, Kyrgios briefly sought guidance from Lleyton Hewitt at the US Open, though he was quick to clarify that Hewitt was not officially appointed as his coach. A year later, he engaged Sebastien Grosjean on a part-time basis, acknowledging the necessity of mentorship in order to reach his full potential.

Nevertheless, he at a later juncture asserted that he did not currently have a coach, nor had intentions of engaging one. This stance has been maintained to the present, with Grosjean being the last coach to have partnered with Kyrgios.

Kyrgios’ career has witnessed significant peaks and valleys, with his most distinguished season occurring in 2022, during which he notably excelled without the aid of a coach. His performance this year has been affected by a knee surgery and subsequent setbacks, leading to limited participation in tournaments.

It remains to be discerned whether Kyrgios will pursue a coaching affiliation in the future. For the time being, his journey as an uncoached player has been marked by both successes and setbacks, establishing him as a compelling figure to observe in the realm of tennis.
