Resignation of Summerland Steam Hockey Coach

The Summerland Steam junior hockey team is currently undergoing changes as Morten Kjolby, the head coach and general manager, has recently resigned from his position. This decision came as a result of personal issues and was communicated through a note from the Steam dated December 26th.

In light of Kjolby’s departure, the club has expressed their gratitude for his contributions both on the ice and within the community during his tenure with the organization. The team is now faced with the task of filling the vacant positions left by Kjolby.

To address the void left by Kjolby, assistant coach John DePourcq will step up as the new head coach. Additionally, the former general manager, Steve Hogg, will resume his role on an interim basis. DePourcq previously held the position of head coach for the Summerland Steam, and his experience will undoubtedly be valuable to the team during this transitional period.

The coaching staff will also see the continuation of Everett Scherger as an assistant coach, and the addition of Trevor Aubie, who will join as an assistant coach for the remainder of the season. These adjustments are made in an effort to ensure the seamless operation of the team as they navigate through this change.

Kjolby initially joined the Summerland Steam as the head coach for the 2023-2024 junior hockey season. Prior to his tenure with the team, he had an extensive playing career in Europe before transitioning into coaching, with experience in Denmark, Sweden, and Spain. His impact and influence during his time with the team were significant, and his presence will undoubtedly be missed.

In contrast, DePourcq previously served as the head coach of the Summerland Steam from 2012 to 2019, leading the team to seven consecutive playoff appearances during his time at the helm. This track record speaks to his capabilities as a coach and provides a source of reassurance for the team as they move forward under his guidance.

As the Summerland Steam embarks on a new chapter with changes within its coaching staff, the team remains focused on their goal of continuing their success within the league. The club is optimistic about the capabilities of the new coaching lineup and the contributions they will bring to the team.

While change often presents challenges, it also offers the opportunity for growth and development. The Summerland Steam is looking ahead with optimism as they navigate through this transition and remain committed to their pursuit of excellence within the realm of junior hockey.
