Arcola, a small community with a strong passion for hockey, recently hosted its annual Minor Hockey Day on December 16, heralding the commencement of the 2023-2024 hockey season for the town’s budding athletes. Diverging from past practice, the event was scheduled earlier to preempt any clashes with neighbouring towns.
The success of the day was made feasible by the significant contributions from esteemed sponsors such as Arcola Co-op, FSK Construction Services, CEDA, T4 Farms, John Lees, Laurie James, Redvers Ag, and Three Buffalo Workshop. These sponsors not only provided financial support for the event, but also generously furnished prizes for the raffle table.
The action-packed day commenced with the youngest players, the Arcola U7 team, engaging in a friendly match against their counterparts from Carlyle. Coaches Michelle Cundall and Curtis Johnston articulated their pleasure in guiding the young players, attributing their eagerness and zeal for learning as commendable. Despite their tender years, the adept four-year-old players exhibited remarkable determination and skill.
Following a well-earned lunch interval, the U9 team graced the ice, competing against Carlyle. The competitions persisted throughout the day, with the U11, U13, and female U18 teams displaying their expertise and sportsmanship on the ice. The pinnacle of the day was undoubtedly the fast-paced and riveting match between the Arcola U18 men and their adversaries from Milestone, which garnered a substantial audience.
In addition to the gripping games, the event also featured a 50/50 draw, culminating in Colleen Fornwald emerging as the fortunate winner. The committee extended their gratitude to the volunteers, sponsors, parents, and coaches for their unwavering support and strenuous efforts in ensuring the success of the event.
The prevailing spirit of camaraderie and sportsmanship was palpable throughout the day, as families and acquaintances congregated to rally behind the young athletes. Carlee Annis, a member of the organizing committee, articulated her elation at the event’s remarkable turnout, underscoring the significance of community coalescence in celebrating the talents of the young athletes.
As is customary with any community event, the Minor Hockey Day in Arcola was the result of a concerted team endeavour, kindling delight and anticipation in all those in attendance. Although the day may have drawn to a conclusion, the memories and fraternity are certain to galvanize the young athletes as they persist in pursuing their love for the game in the forthcoming season.
