Indian Women’s Hockey Squad Announced for Olympic Qualifiers: Savita Punia to Lead the Team

India’s women’s hockey team is fully prepared for the Olympic Qualifiers, with 18 players ready to take on the challenge. The team, led by veteran goalkeeper Savita Punia, aims to secure qualification for the Paris Olympics 2024. The event is scheduled to take place in Ranchi from January 13 to 19.

Highly experienced player Savita Punia will continue to lead the team, with Vandana Katariya serving as her deputy. Chief Coach of the Indian Women’s team, Janneke Schopman, emphasized the importance of the tournament in the team’s journey to Paris 2024. “It is imperative that we meet expectations, and all the players in the squad are working towards qualification,” stated Schopman in a release.

The team has been carefully selected to ensure a well-balanced combination of skill and experience in all positions. In addition to Punia and Katariya, who will provide guidance as Captain and Vice-Captain, the squad includes players who have faced high-pressure situations and are well equipped to handle the challenges of the qualifiers.

Savita Punia has recently been honoured with the FIH Goalkeeper of the Year Award for the third consecutive time, highlighting her exceptional talent and contribution to the sport. Meanwhile, veteran forward Vandana Katariya made history by becoming the first-ever female player from India to achieve 300 caps, a remarkable accomplishment in her career.

In the qualifiers, India has been placed in Pool B alongside New Zealand, Italy, and the United States. Their first match is scheduled against the United States on January 13, followed by a game against New Zealand on January 14. They will conclude the Pool B matches with a game against Italy on January 16.

The team comprises of skilled and talented players in various positions, including goalkeepers, defenders, midfielders, and forwards. The coaching staff has ensured that the team is well-prepared to face the challenges and deliver their best performance in the upcoming qualifiers.
