The Oasis Academy boys basketball team encountered a challenging start to the second half of the Northern 2A season, experiencing a series of closely contested losses on the road. Despite a commendable performance against one of the top teams, the Bighorns ultimately fell short in their recent games.
In their initial game of the second half, the Bighorns came tantalisingly close to causing an upset against Yerington. Holding a five-point lead entering the fourth quarter, the team ultimately succumbed to a 63-51 defeat as the Lions mounted a comeback to secure the victory.
Continuing their road trip, Oasis Academy suffered further defeats at the hands of Battle Mountain and West Wendover. The team’s coach, Don Schank, highlighted the defensive and rebounding efforts that had given them a chance against Yerington, but acknowledged the difficulty of coping with the full-court press applied by their opponents.
Despite the losses, outstanding performances from Fenn Mackedon, Matthew Bird, and Trevor Barrenchea underscored the team’s determination and individual talent. Mackedon, in particular, stood out with a double-double and a series of impressive statistical performances.
Reflecting on the games, Schank commended the team for their efforts and resilience in the face of tough opposition. He underscored the significance of such games in identifying areas for improvement and development for the team.
The Lady Bighorns also encountered a demanding week, struggling to generate offensive momentum in losses to Yerington, Battle Mountain, and West Wendover.
Looking ahead, Oasis Academy will aim to regroup as they prepare to host Coral Academy and take on Silver Stage at the city-county gym. Upon returning home, the Bighorns will be seeking to bounce back from their recent setbacks and deliver a strong showing for their supporters.
With determination and a positive mindset, both the boys and girls basketball teams at Oasis Academy are primed to rise to the challenge and demonstrate their resilience on the court.
