An Exceptional Performance by Callum Shinkwin at Ras Al Khaimah Championship

The Ras Al Khaimah Championship has witnessed a remarkable display of skill from England’s Callum Shinkwin, who has taken the lead despite narrowly missing the opportunity to achieve an incredible sub-60 round at the Al Hamra Golf Club. Shinkwin covered his first 14 holes in 10 under par, putting him on pace to match Oliver Fisher’s historic 59 in the 2018 Portugal Masters with just four holes remaining.

Notwithstanding an impressive run of eight consecutive birdies from the 16th to the fifth, which fell just one short of the world record, Shinkwin was unable to sustain the momentum, settling for par on the sixth and dropping a shot on the next hole. Nonetheless, he finished strong with a birdie on the par-five eighth and a par on the ninth, concluding with a superb 62, equaling the lowest round of his career.

At 10 under par, Shinkwin currently maintains a two-shot lead over Richard Mansell and Brandon Stone. Mansell, who also had an opportunity to achieve a 59, was left frustrated after completing the back nine with 29, only to stumble with a double bogey on the par-five eighth in the final stretch.

In reflecting on his performance, Shinkwin emphasized his focus on making birdies without fixating on the prospect of achieving a 59. He also expressed disappointment regarding his performance on the seventh hole, acknowledging the challenge of achieving a 59 on a par 72 course.

Mansell also offered commentary on his performance, expressing frustration at the missed opportunity but choosing to focus on the positives of a strong start to the championship. Despite a double bogey in the closing holes, Mansell recognized the progress in his game and the areas he has been working on.

Defending champion Daniel Gavins faced a challenging start, covering his first 11 holes in eight over par before finishing with two birdies to sign for an opening 78.

The Ras Al Khaimah Championship has undoubtedly showcased exceptional talent and thrilling performances, setting the stage for an exciting tournament ahead.
