Community Comes Together to Support Basketball Coach After Brain Injury

The tightly-knit community of Burlington has come together to express their support for the esteemed basketball coach, Jason Newbury, following a brain injury sustained from a fall. Newbury, renowned for his volunteer efforts in the community, suffered a head injury while skating with his family on January 19th and is currently undergoing treatment at the Health Sciences Centre in St. John’s.

Mayor Rudy Norman has conveyed the community’s deep concern for Newbury’s well-being, emphasizing the resolve to unite and offer support to him and his family during this challenging period. As a coach at M.S.B. Regional Academy, Newbury has significantly influenced the lives of numerous students through his emphasis on sportsmanship and personal development, both on and off the court.

In response to Newbury’s hospitalization and the financial burden it places on his family, the basketball team’s students have taken the initiative to organize a fundraising event. By setting up a mock toll booth in Burlington, they managed to raise an impressive £800 in just two hours. This gesture not only reflects the high esteem in which the students hold their coach, but also underscores the positive impact Newbury has had on their lives.

The overwhelming outpouring of support from the local community and individuals from distant locations has been remarkable. Donations continue to pour in to aid Newbury and his family during this difficult time. With Newbury unable to work due to his injury and his wife faithfully standing by his side, the community recognizes the necessity of providing financial assistance during this time of need.

It is heartening to witness the community’s efforts to give back and support an individual who has given so much to them over the years. The unwavering support for Newbury is a testament to the positive impact he has made in the lives of those around him. In times like these, the strength of a community truly shines through.
