The R.A. Long Lumberjacks recently achieved a 64-51 victory against Woodland in their 2A Greater St. Helens League contest on Friday, despite a sluggish start. Initially falling behind 9-2 and losing two key players to foul trouble in the first quarter, the Jacks managed to rally behind a 5-guard lineup and emerge victorious on the road.
Scoring 16 points each, Lonnie Brown Jr. and Landon Irwin led the offense, with center Rhet Young delivering 14 points for the Lumberjacks. R.A. Long coach Jeray Key noted the team’s ability to handle adversity, especially when their big players were out during the first half. The Jacks were able to turn the game around and secure a nine-point lead going into half-time.
The team’s offensive turnaround was attributed to their strategic gameplay, making the opposing team’s big players guard the perimeter. Looking ahead, the Lumberjacks are preparing for a challenging stretch, with three of their upcoming four games against opponents who have previously defeated them this season.
Conversely, Woodland, with a 4-12 overall and 2-10 league record, has been eliminated from postseason contention. Despite this, Woodland coach Justin Gabbard emphasized the team’s commitment to continue competing and giving their best in the remaining games.
The high school boys’ basketball action in the 2A Greater St. Helens League promises an exciting and competitive atmosphere as the season progresses, with teams like R.A. Long and Woodland bringing their A-game to the court.
