Flying Dutchmen Dominate Rivalry Game Against Calvin University

The recent match between the men’s basketball team of Hope College and Calvin University proved to be a monumental showdown, the likes of which have not been witnessed in decades. The Flying Dutchmen achieved a remarkable triumph over the Knights, who were ranked fourth, concluding the game with a final score of 59-42. Not since the post-World War II era in 1948 has Hope College emerged victorious in such a manner.

Right from the onset, the Flying Dutchmen demonstrated control over the game, positioning themselves to claim the second spot in the MIAA standings, drawing level with Calvin. Both teams currently trail behind Trine University by 1 ½ games. Trine University is scheduled to face off against Adrian College on Sunday, Jan. 28, at the Little Caesars Arena in Detroit.

Coach Greg Mitchell conveyed his satisfaction with the manner in which the Flying Dutchmen asserted themselves in the game, particularly during the initial 3 ½ minutes when they secured an 11-0 lead. This was a stark contrast to their previous encounter with Calvin, during which they struggled to find their stride. Hope College restricted Calvin University to a mere 25.5% field-goal shooting, representing a significant defensive accomplishment for the team.

Insights from the leading scorer, Marcus Wourman, indicated a more refined and coordinated performance from the Flying Dutchmen, showcasing improved connectivity and court positioning. Wourman, who accumulated 13 points during the game, also contributed two assists to the team’s success.

Despite a valiant effort from the players of Calvin University, the Flying Dutchmen exhibited commendable defense, particularly against prominent players such as Marcus Bult and Jalen Overway.

The successful implementation of strategic defense against Overway was underscored as a pivotal factor in their eventual triumph. Quillan and Devin Cheaney were lauded for their contributions, demonstrating a level of resilience and anticipation crucial to securing victory.

With Quillan achieving a double-double of 12 points and 12 rebounds, the Flying Dutchmen displayed exceptional teamwork and coordination. The team’s focus, coachability, and dedication to their game plans were pivotal to their success.

The next challenge for the Flying Dutchmen awaits at Trine University, where they aim to make amends for their previous loss to the Trine Thunder. This upcoming game is highly anticipated and will undoubtedly put the team’s resilience and determination to the test.
