The women’s basketball team of the University at Buffalo (UB) displayed a formidable effort against the Toledo Rockets, but ultimately suffered a 63-67 defeat on Saturday night. Despite the setback, UB senior guard Chiella Watson delivered a record-breaking performance, scoring an impressive 47 points and reaching a milestone of 1,000 career points.
With a current season record of 10-8 and 4-4 in the MAC, UB was resolute in facing the Rockets, who boasted a stronger 14-4 record and stood at 7-1 in the MAC. The Bulls sought redemption after Toledo ousted them from the playoffs last season and subsequently clinched the MAC title.
The game began slowly for UB, trailing 13-7 after the first quarter. The Rockets capitalized on inside plays and free throw opportunities, leading to a 37-25 halftime advantage, despite a layup and foul from freshman guard Kirsten Lewis-Williams.
However, the Bulls staged a comeback in the third quarter, embarking on a 9-0 run and ultimately overtaking the lead at 43-42. The game remained closely contested until the Rockets surged ahead 47-51 in the final quarter. Nevertheless, Watson’s impressive performance enabled the Bulls to draw level at 63 with 1:24 remaining. Regrettably, the Rockets secured the victory with a decisive basket, leaving UB with a narrow defeat.
Watson’s remarkable display on the court accounted for 47 of the team’s 63 points, complemented by five rebounds and three assists. Her exceptional performance not only made history for UB but also established a new record for the most points scored in a single game by any player, male or female, in the school’s history. Additionally, she eclipsed the previous record set at Savage Arena in 1985, alongside achieving the most points scored in a D1 game this season, breaking the previous record held by Caitlin Clark.
While the loss was disheartening, UB’s women’s basketball team can take pride in Watson’s outstanding feat. Looking ahead, the Bulls will confront Ohio University (7-11, 4-4 MAC) on Wednesday night. The game will take place in Athens, Ohio, and will be available for streaming on ESPN+.
