The women’s ice hockey team from Harvard University faced a formidable challenge against the 6th ranked Cornell Big Red at Lynah Rink. Despite goals from Kaley MacDonald and Sophie Ensley, the Crimson were defeated by the Big Red with a final score of 7-2.
The game began with the Big Red taking an early lead, scoring two goals within the first four minutes. Harvard’s goaltender, Alex Pellicci, made an impressive 18 saves in the first period to keep the team in the game. However, Cornell managed to add one more goal before the end of the first period, taking a 3-0 lead.
Harvard was eager to make a comeback and had a strong opportunity with a powerplay in the second period. Kaley MacDonald scored the team’s first goal, followed by another goal from Sophie Ensley, bringing the score to 4-2. Despite the effort, Cornell added two more goals in the third period, securing a 7-2 victory.
Both Kaley MacDonald and Sophie Ensley demonstrated their skills, with MacDonald scoring her third goal of the season and Ensley scoring her third goal of the year. Assists were also recorded by Ellie Bayard, Jenna MacDonald, Gwyn Lapp, and Maria Pape. Goalkeeper Alex Pellicci made an outstanding 43 saves, and Gabi Davidson Adams blocked three shots.
The Crimson’s penalty kill successfully shut down all four of Cornell’s powerplay opportunities, highlighting the team’s defensive capabilities.
Looking ahead, Harvard will be on the road to face the Union Garnet Chargers in Schenectady, N.Y. The team will then return home to the Bright-Landry Hockey Center to play against the Dartmouth Big Green, marking the end of a challenging five-game road stretch.
Despite the challenging loss against Cornell, the Harvard women’s ice hockey team continues to demonstrate resilience and determination as they prepare for their upcoming games.
