In January 2024, the Guelph Police Service Special Victims Unit commenced an investigation into a historical sexual assault complaint against former basketball coach Cheryton Bennett. The alleged incidents occurred between 2018 and 2022 while Bennett was coaching with Tri-City Thunder and involved a female victim who was 12 to 15 years old at the time.
As a result of the investigation, 30-year-old Cheryton Bennett of Guelph has been arrested and charged with sexual assault, sexual interference, invitation to sexual touching, and uttering threats. She is scheduled to appear in court in March.
Due to privacy laws, additional details of the case cannot be disclosed. However, the Guelph Police Service is urging the public to be vigilant of Bennett’s presence in the community, emphasizing the protection of the public and the support for victims of crime as top priorities.
In connection with the investigation, Bennett is subject to specific conditions, including restrictions from attending public parks or swimming areas where individuals under the age of 16 may be present, as well as daycare centres, school grounds, playgrounds, or community centres. Additionally, she is prohibited from engaging in any paid or unpaid activity that involves being in a position of trust or authority towards persons under the age of 16 years.
