In the most recent update of the Western Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic League (WPIAL) girls’ basketball rankings, significant changes have occurred across the various classes. A detailed examination of the leading teams in each classification is warranted.
Class 6A
Peters Township maintains its dominance in Class 6A with a commendable record of 19-0, firmly establishing their top position. Norwin and North Allegheny also uphold their strong standings at second and third place, respectively. Of note, Upper St. Clair has made a notable surge in the rankings, claiming the fourth spot. Meanwhile, Chartiers Valley has slightly dropped to fifth place. Unfortunately, Seneca Valley has fallen out of the top 5 in this class.
Class 5A
The competition in Class 5A remains intense, with Oakland Catholic maintaining an unbeaten streak at the number one position. McKeesport has moved up to second place, displacing Lincoln Park to third place. Armstrong secures the fourth spot, while Trinity joins the rankings at fifth place. Conversely, Hampton has slipped out of the top 5.
Class 4A
Blackhawk remains unchallenged at the top of Class 4A, closely followed by North Catholic and Elizabeth Forward. Highlands has ascended to the fourth spot, pushing Laurel Highlands down to fifth place. Notably, no teams have dropped out of the rankings in this class.
Class 3A
Competition intensifies in Class 3A, with Avonworth maintaining its lead while Waynesburg comfortably holds onto second place. Shady Side Academy and Neshannock remain at the third and fourth positions, respectively. South Park has entered the top 5, replacing Seton LaSalle.
Class 2A
Greensburg Central Catholic continues to hold the top spot in Class 2A, with Aliquippa closely behind. Serra Catholic retains its third position, while Fort Cherry rises to take the fourth spot. Meanwhile, Chartiers-Houston, previously ranked fourth, has now fallen to fifth place, and Clairton has dropped out of the top 5.
Class A
In Class A, Union continues to lead the way, followed by St. Joseph in second place. Aquinas Academy, Monessen, and Riverview maintain their positions at third, fourth, and fifth place, respectively, with no changes in the rankings for this class.
It is evident that the girls’ basketball landscape in Western Pennsylvania is thriving with fierce competition and standout performances from various teams across different classes. It will be intriguing to witness how these rankings continue to evolve as the season progresses.
