Former professional footballers often transition into roles as pundits or coaches post-retirement. However, some opt for unexpected career changes. Fabien Barthez, a former Manchester United goalkeeper, retired from football in 2008 and delved into the fast-paced world of motorsport. This move did not come as a surprise to those familiar with the eccentric goalkeeper, renowned for his daring moves on the field, and having secured two Premier League titles. His love for motorsport was longstanding, even during his football career. Barthez expressed, “I have always been fascinated by motorsport, even when I was playing football. It always intrigued me. I wanted to understand what it felt like being in a car. I had to wait until the end of my pro career to try it.”
In 2018, a French TV documentary unveiled Barthez’s profound passion for motorsport, shedding light on a conversation he had with former French Formula One driver Olivier Panis back in 1998. Reflecting on his decision to pursue a career in motorsport at the age of 36, Barthez stated, “I’m from the generation who were told to profit from our careers because they were over so quickly. And when they’re over, they’re over. That’s my message to the young: profit, because it goes very quickly.”
Barthez’s dedication to this new passion was evident in his journey. His early days in motorsport proved challenging, with finishes without points and unranked events. However, in 2010, he achieved his first podium finish, and by 2013, he had become a French GT Champion. Additionally, he competed in the renowned 24 Hours of Le Mans race, finishing a commendable 29th in his first entry.
A documentary in 2018 depicted Barthez’s intense preparation and commitment to racing, drawing parallels to his football days. He stated, “It was just like football in terms of preparing, the way the pressure mounted, you see the ground and the stadium, the pressure mounts, everything came back to me.” In 2019, at the age of 52, Barthez even attempted kicking conversions with the French rugby team as they prepared for the World Cup.
Barthez’s journey from the football pitch to racing tracks to rugby fields exemplifies the thrill of embracing the unexpected and wholeheartedly following one’s passion. His ventures showcase the limitless pursuit of lifelong passions.
