It has been officially announced that the esteemed David Wilson is set to be inducted into the Queensland Rugby Union Hall of Fame, in recognition of his illustrious career as a Wallaby and Queensland Reds flanker.
Born and raised in suburban Brisbane, Wilson’s passion for rugby began at a young age, as he played barefooted in the Easts Under-6s on chilly winter mornings. His dedication and talent eventually led him to reach the pinnacle of success as a pivotal figure in the Wallabies’ golden periods between 1998 and 2000, as well as a standout force for the Reds.
The announcement of Wilson’s induction will be made at the Season Launch Long Lunch on February 16 at the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre, where he will join two other distinguished Queenslanders in the QRU Hall of Fame.
Recognised for his humility and team-oriented approach, Wilson’s contributions and achievements have left an indelible mark on the rugby landscape. Notably, his impressive resume includes winning the coveted Rothmans Medal for club and Queensland excellence in 1989 and 1991, as well as making his Test debut against Scotland in 1992.
Throughout his tenure as a Queensland Reds player, Wilson exemplified unwavering commitment, having participated in 105 games and serving as the team’s first-up skipper in 1998-99. His time with the Reds also saw him play a pivotal role in securing two Super Ten trophies in tense finals abroad, cementing his legacy as a formidable force on the rugby field.
Not only was Wilson a formidable presence on the pitch, but he also made a significant impact as a Wallaby, with standout performances and noteworthy achievements, including multiple Bledisloe Cup wins and the 2000 Tri-Nations success.
