Coaching and Love: A Tale of the Cal-Wheat Varsity Basketball Team

The esteemed Calamus-Wheatland girls’ varsity basketball team is under the leadership of a married couple who were united by their mutual love for coaching the sport.

Matt and Amy Boeckmann form the married coaching pair for the Cal-Wheat girls’ varsity basketball team. Despite the unique dynamic of coaching alongside a spouse, Amy Boeckmann expressed, “It is beneficial, although it can be challenging at times. We tend to work well together. If one person says something, we build on each other’s ideas. We also tend to complement each other. Our coaching style is usually relaxed, which I believe helps as well.”

On the other hand, Matt Boeckmann added, “We coach together and then leave it on the court. Currently, we have discussions after and sometimes before games, but these are all positive things.”

This season marks the seventh year that the Boeckmanns have been coaching the Warriors, with their daughter, Emily Boeckmann, excelling as a senior on the team. Matt Boeckmann shared, “We have been coaching her and her teammates since they were in third grade. So, it has been quite a journey to get here, but it has been great.”

The couple has also coached their daughter in other sports. Emily Boeckmann highlighted, “As I have gotten older, I have come to appreciate the respect that has developed. My mom coaches volleyball and my dad coaches softball too. So every season, I am with them, and I have learned through experience.”

Amy Boeckman disclosed their efforts to keep coaching matters on the court and not bring it home, saying, “It has its moments, sometimes it is difficult for her to talk to us as parents rather than coaches. We try not to discuss basketball as much as possible at home and to separate it if we can.”

Emily, the youngest child in the Boeckmann family, expressed her excitement about sharing her experiences with her parents, reflecting on their six-year commitment to her athletic journey. “It is truly special to see the sacrifices they have made, as they have been committed to this for 6 years now. I am deeply grateful for everything they have done for me.”

The Boeckmanns, who are high school sweethearts, attended Calamus-Wheatland and Central DeWitt high schools, respectively.

The team is preparing for their Class 1-A Regional Quarter-Final game at home on Feb. 13.

It is commendable to witness the dedication and passion of the Boeckmann family towards coaching and their family, providing an inspiring example for the students and the community.
