Australian Tennis Community Shines in 2024 Australia Day Honours List

On the 9th of February, 2024, an announcement was made regarding several members of the tennis community from Victoria who were included in the Australia Day Honours List. These individuals were honoured for their devoted service to the community and their respective areas of expertise.

Former Tennis Victoria Director Anna Jones-Speedie, who held the position from 2015 to 2021, received recognition for her contributions to local government and the community of Wodonga. In addition to her role as Mayor of the Wodonga Council from 2015 to 2020, Anna’s leadership extended to her involvement with several Foundations, solidifying her reputation as a respected figure within the Victorian community.

Another notable individual, Mr George Leslie Bird, from Inverloch, was honoured for his longstanding commitment to the Wonthaggi community. With a history of active membership and leadership roles in the Wonthaggi Lions Club dating back to 1961, Mr Bird has also been a foundational member at Lance Creek Tennis Club and the Wonthaggi Orchid Society, demonstrating his unwavering dedication to community service.

Wendy Joy Hewitt, a resident of Warracknabeal, was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) in the General Division for her exemplary service to the community and education in Warracknabeal. Her involvement with the Anzac Park Tennis Centre, where she held various positions and currently holds life membership, showcases her long-term commitment to promoting sports and recreational activities within her community.

Sandra Elizabeth Knight, from Burwood East, received the Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) in recognition of her service to individuals who are blind or have low vision. With a career at Vision Australia spanning from 2000 to 2009 and subsequent voluntary work with Blind Sports and Recreation Victoria from 2010 to 2021, Sandra has been an instrumental advocate for the empowerment and inclusion of individuals with visual impairments.

Finally, Janet (Jan) Mock from Porepunkah was acknowledged with the Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) for her contributions to the Alpine Shire community. Actively involved as a Heritage Network member of the Alpine Shire and a former Committee and Club Official at Myrtleford Tennis Club, Janet has left an indelible mark through her dedicated service to her local area.

The Australian tennis community is undoubtedly proud to see these exceptional individuals being recognised for their outstanding contributions in the Australia Day Honours List. Their unwavering dedication and selfless service have made a significant impact on the lives of many, and it is only fitting that they receive this esteemed acknowledgement for their efforts.
