Tennis Teams Split Opening Matches: Faced Marist and Coppin State

The men’s and women’s tennis teams inaugurated their regular seasons last weekend with matches against Marist and Coppin State.

The preliminary matches yielded a mixed outcome for the two teams, as the women’s team succumbed to a 4-3 defeat against Marist on Saturday, but rebounded with a resounding 7-0 victory over Coppin State on Sunday. Conversely, the men’s team suffered a 4-2 setback against Marist, before emerging triumphant with a 7-1 win against Coppin State.

Sophomore team captain Alyssa Perdomo played a pivotal role in leading the women’s team, securing a comfortable straight-set triumph in the first singles match against Coppin State. Perdomo, alongside sophomore Carmen Merkel, also clinched a doubles victory against Coppin State.

Recalling her performance, Perdomo conceded to feeling apprehensive in the initial match, but found her stride in the subsequent encounter. The team’s success was further bolstered by impressive performances from freshmen Hanna Ganchi and Mia Hernandez.

Likewise, the men’s team witnessed an outstanding display from junior Arman Ganchi, who emerged victorious in both matches with straight-set wins. Ganchi expressed confidence and satisfaction with his performance, despite initial reservations.

The teams encountered adversities, as their captains were sidelined due to injuries. Nevertheless, freshmen Derrin Lerner and Ryan Burns made significant contributions in the opening matches.

Looking ahead, both teams are preparing for a match against St. Joseph’s in Philadelphia. Arman Ganchi is eager to assess the team’s capabilities against their forthcoming opponents, believing that a triumph would provide a substantial morale boost.

Both teams remain sanguine about their potential and eagerly anticipate the forthcoming opportunities in the season.
