The Axe Cliff Golf Club has recently made a generous donation of £409 to Guide Dogs for the Blind, a charitable organisation that provides mobility assistance to the visually impaired. The donation was the result of fundraising efforts by last year’s Seniors Captain, Stephen Thompson, who nominated Guide Dogs for the Blind as the club’s chosen cause.
During a special presentation, Lena Welch, a dedicated volunteer and sight-impaired individual, accepted the cheque on behalf of the charity. Lena, who has been involved with Guide Dogs for the Blind since 2008, has a personal connection to the cause as she has experienced firsthand the life-changing impact of having a guide dog. In fact, she is currently the coordinator of the charity’s East Devon fundraising group.
Also in attendance at the presentation was Geoff Chapple, a devoted puppy raiser for the charity, along with his first young dog, Ozzy. Lena shared her heartfelt story of receiving support from the charity, highlighting the remarkable difference that guide dogs have made in her life since she first acquired one in 2008.
Having been visually impaired since birth, Lena expressed her profound gratitude for the independence and confidence that each of her four guide dogs has provided her over the years. She recounted a particularly poignant moment when her second guide dog, Texan, heroically saved her life by preventing her from stepping out in front of a fast-moving car. This extraordinary act of bravery led to Texan receiving the Guide Dog of the Year award in 2012.
The cost of supporting each guide dog from birth to retirement is an estimated £55,000, and Guide Dogs for the Blind ensures that financial constraints do not prevent individuals from benefitting from their services. Lena emphasised the invaluable support and training that the charity offers to ensure that visually impaired individuals can maintain their independence while waiting for their next guide dog.
As someone who is currently in the early stages of a partnership with her guide dog, Alex, Lena expressed the immeasurable joy and sense of security that comes with having a loyal companion by her side. She reflected on the relief of not having to constantly worry about navigating her surroundings, thanks to the diligent assistance provided by her guide dog.
Local businesses interested in supporting Guide Dogs for the Blind are encouraged to get involved by hosting collections or setting up donations boxes on their premises. Those who wish to contribute can connect with Lena via email at [email protected].
The heartfelt donation from Axe Cliff Golf Club serves as a testament to the unwavering commitment of individuals and organisations in supporting causes that make a tangible difference in the lives of those in need. Through their generosity, Guide Dogs for the Blind can continue to provide invaluable assistance to the visually impaired, empowering them to lead fulfilling and independent lives.
