The women’s ice hockey team of Harvard University encountered a challenging match against the Yale Bulldogs on Saturday evening, resulting in a 3-0 defeat at the Bright-Landry Hockey Center. Despite a commendable defensive effort and 30 saves by goaltender Alex Pellicci, the Bulldogs managed to secure the win with three goals in the third period.
This contest with Yale marked the second meeting of the season, following a narrow 2-1 loss to the same opponent on October 27. The game also served as a special occasion to honor the team’s seniors, Rose O’Connor and co-captain Shannon Hollands, during the Senior Night celebrations.
Alex Pellicci, making her first start since January 27, displayed a stellar performance as she guarded the net. The opening period of the game remained goalless, marked by impressive defensive displays from both teams, with Pellicci making 10 saves. Harvard took the lead in blocked shots with a score of 5-3, showcasing the team’s resilience on the defensive front.
The middle frame continued to see Pellicci shine, repelling three Bulldog attempts. The Crimson stepped up their offensive efforts, resulting in a power-play attempt. Despite their determination, the team was unable to capitalize on this opportunity and instead excelled in a subsequent penalty kill. Pellicci’s exceptional goalkeeping skills were on full display as she made six crucial saves in a two-minute stretch towards the end of the period.
In the final period, the Bulldogs exerted immense pressure, eventually breaking the deadlock and securing two goals despite Pellicci’s valiant efforts. With 3:40 remaining, Harvard took the risk of pulling Pellicci from the goal, but the Bulldogs capitalized on this to seal their victory with an empty-net goal.
Despite the defeat, Alex Pellicci’s exceptional performance could not be overlooked, as she finished the game with 30 saves, surpassing the 30-save mark for the eleventh time in the season. The Crimson’s defensive line also showcased tremendous determination, totaling 24 blocks compared to Yale’s 8 blocks. Defence player Mia Biotti emerged as a standout performer with five blocks, including three in the second period.
Looking ahead, Harvard will now embark on their final stretch of regular-season play, facing No. 3 Clarkson on Friday, followed by a game against No. 7 St. Lawrence on Saturday. Both matches will be available for streaming on ESPN+.
