The Lindenwood women’s ice hockey team encountered a difficult match against Mercyhurst last Saturday, resulting in a 6-2 defeat to the Lakers. The Lions exhibited formidable efforts, but Mercyhurst ultimately emerged victorious.
The game commenced with the Lakers scoring first at the 6:56 mark of the initial period, followed by another goal at the 18:41 mark, concluding the period with a 2-0 advantage. Despite concerted efforts from both teams, no further goals were scored in the remainder of the period.
The Lions demonstrated resilience in the subsequent period, securing their first goal at the 6:09 mark through a power-play. Gigi Pora, with assistance from Sarah Davies and Morgan Neitzke, propelled the Lions onto the scoreboard, trailing 2-1 to the Lakers. However, Mercyhurst retaliated at the 16:34 mark, extending their lead to 3-1 by the period’s conclusion.
During the third period, the Lions promptly scored, narrowing the deficit to one. Quinn McLaren, supported by Morgan Neitzke and Gigi Pora, brought the score to 3-2. Unfortunately, the Lakers proceeded to score three additional goals, including one with an empty net, solidifying their triumph.
The Lions registered 20 shots on net compared to the Lakers’ 31, with goalkeepers Natalie Ferenc and Ava McIllmurray combining for 25 saves throughout the game. Following this match, the Lions’ record stood at 11-17-2 for the year and 6-10-2 overall.
Gigi Pora and Morgan Neitzke emerged as the statistical leaders for the Lions, each accumulating 2 points. Pora and Quinn McLaren each scored a goal, while Neitzke contributed 2 assists. Pora also led in face-off wins with 11, and Sydney Rarick and Thea Jørgensen each recorded 2 blocked shots.
