The women’s basketball team at Snow College was faced with a challenging match against Utah State University Eastern this past weekend, resulting in a significant 82-57 defeat. This setback brings the team’s overall record to 12-9, with a 2-5 standing in the Scenic West Athletic Conference play.
In anticipation of the game against the Eagles, the Badgers were already contending with the repercussions of two previous losses, one of which was against USUE. Their most recent game concluded with a score of 80-62, marking a loss to No. 23 Salt Lake Community College on February 1st.
The game against the Eagles did not begin favorably for the Badgers, as the opposing team swiftly secured a 12-2 lead right from the start. This early lead led to a double-digit advantage within a mere four minutes of play. Although the Badgers attempted to mount a comeback and managed to reduce the lead to six points, a subsequent 11-0 run by USUE expanded the gap to 23-6. The Eagles continued to assert their dominance, ultimately establishing a 20-point lead and entering halftime with a comfortable 44-30 advantage.
Regrettably for the Badgers, they were unable to make substantial headway in narrowing the deficit. A prolonged 17-2 run by the Eagles at the commencement of the third quarter further widened the gap, leaving the Badgers trailing at a disheartening 64-34. This insurmountable shortfall culminated in a final score of 82-57 in favor of Utah State University Eastern.
Despite the arduous nature of the game, Maliyah Elliot emerged as a standout player for the Badgers, leading the team offensively with 14 points and five rebounds. Ainsley Thurber was the sole other Badger to achieve double figures, contributing 10 points to the team’s score. In total, the Badgers managed a shooting percentage of 38% from the field and 25% from beyond the arc.
Looking forward, Snow College will be returning home for its final homestand of the season.
