Cornell Women’s Hockey Triumphs in ECAC Quarterfinal Race

The Cornell women’s hockey team has successfully secured a place in the ECAC quarterfinals following triumphs over Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) and Union. The victory over RPI, in particular, was hard-fought, requiring 55 shots and an additional period for the Red to emerge with a 1-0 win. Subsequently, Cornell faced the Garnet Chargers and emerged victorious with a 3-1 win.

Prior to these matches, Cornell had already exhibited their prowess by winning five of their last six games, including victories over ranked opponents. However, they faced formidable competition from a strong RPI team and goaltender, fresh off an impressive win against then-ranked No. 14, Yale.

The game against RPI showcased an impressive performance from freshman goaltender Annelies Bergmann, who maintained a clean sheet. As a result, the Red achieved a first-round bye and home-ice advantage for the quarterfinals of the ECAC Hockey tournament.

Following the intense victory over RPI, Cornell turned their attention to the match against Union. The game initially began at a slow pace, with both teams displaying strong defensive capabilities. However, the Red exhibited resilience, with senior goaltender Deanna Fraser making 13 saves to prevent Union from scoring.

The pace of the game quickened in the second period, culminating in a goal from sophomore forward Mckenna Van Gelder amidst chaos in front of Union’s goal. Despite Union taking an early lead, the Red displayed determination and ultimately secured a 3-1 victory, punctuated by a flurry of goals in the final three minutes of the game.

With these consecutive victories, Cornell has solidified their position in the ECAC quarterfinals and will enjoy the advantage of playing their quarterfinal games at home on the first day of March.

Looking ahead, the team is focused on contending for the Ivy League title in their upcoming matches against Brown and Yale on the road. The Red’s next challenge will be against Brown on Friday, February 16 at 6 p.m., followed by a match against Yale the following day at 3 p.m., both of which will be available for live streaming on ESPN+.

The team’s exceptional performances in recent matches underscore their unwavering commitment and exceptional teamwork. As they set their sights on future victories, Cornell’s women’s hockey team continues to showcase their strength and skill on the ice.
