After a brief closure due to heavy waterlogging at Axe Cliff Golf Club, it was a relief to return to some sense of normalcy over the past weekend. The sun even made an appearance, much to the delight of everyone.
During the weekend, a Roll Up event was held on Saturday, resulting in Bill Dearling emerging victorious, edging out Mike Cottam on countback. Both players achieved an impressive 37 Stableford points.
The Men’s Section also participated in Round 7 of the Winter League competition on Sunday. The winning pair, Paul Cordwell and Shane Brown, delivered a standout performance with 47 points. They faced stiff competition from Mike Chadwick and Tony Davis, who secured a close second place on countback. Not far behind were the father and son team of John & Billy Gait, finishing with 46 points.
In the week prior to the rainy spell, the annual Cush Trophy and February Medal took place, showcasing outstanding play with five players scoring under par. Matt Hall claimed victory in Division 1 with a nett score of 69, narrowly edging out young Dan Taylor on countback. Harvey Gibbons secured the third spot with his score of 72.
Division 2 witnessed some exceptional performances, with Steve Anning delivering his best round in a while to win with a nett score of 64. Paul Cordwell continued his impressive form, clinching second place with a score of 66. Nigel Pritchard, who is involved in both the Men’s and Senior sections, earned a well-deserved third place with a score of 68. The coveted trophy was surely claimed by Steve.
As the weather hopefully improves, everyone is looking forward to getting back to their favourite sport. The recent installation of a water bore hole at the club means that a period of dry weather would be warmly welcomed, as it will greatly reduce the expenses involved in maintaining the Course.
Let’s keep our fingers crossed for some warmer and brighter golfing days ahead.
