Former Liverpool forward Luis Suarez has recently discussed his time at Anfield, expressing his “sadness” at his inability to secure the Premier League title for the club during his tenure.
Suarez, who scored an impressive 82 goals in 133 appearances for Liverpool, played a pivotal role in helping the team win the League Cup in 2012. However, the Uruguayan star narrowly missed leading the team to their first-ever Premier League title in 2014, with Brendan Rodgers’ side finishing just two points behind champions Manchester City.
Reflecting on that season, Suarez expressed his emotions, stating, “In the last year when I played at Anfield, I was so sad for the supporters. I believe one of the best moments of my life occurred in Liverpool during this season because I would shoot from 40 yards and I would score!”
While Suarez acknowledged the disappointment of not clinching the Premier League title, he commended the unwavering support of the Liverpool fans, stating, “I had so much confidence and the supporters, they helped me. I tried my best on the pitch and I miss the support of the Liverpool fans on the pitch.”
The 33-year-old also addressed some fans’ negative reaction to his celebration after scoring for Barcelona against his former club in the first leg of their Champions League semi-final tie in 2019. Despite the backlash, Suarez expressed his hope that fans would understand the circumstances and emphasized the fond memories he holds from his time at Liverpool.
Liverpool eventually went on to win the Champions League in the 2018-2019 season, securing their sixth title after a remarkable comeback against Barcelona in the semi-final and a victory over Tottenham in the final.
Suarez acknowledged the joy the Premier League title has brought to the Liverpool community, stating, “I think they needed this moment, for the Liverpool supporters, for the Liverpool club, for the people, for the Scouse people. I am so happy for them.”
In addition, Suarez extended his well-wishes to the Liverpool team and expressed his happiness for the players and staff as they celebrate their recent success.
The former Liverpool talisman’s candid reflections provide an insight into the emotional impact of his time at Anfield and the deep connection he maintains with the club and its supporters.
