Rugby is experiencing a surge in popularity in Norwich, as the Norwich Youth, Family and Recreation has recently unveiled a complimentary rugby programme tailored for boys aged 13-19. The initiative, generously financed by a $25,000 grant from the Community Foundation of Eastern Connecticut, aims to introduce adolescents to the sport and furnish them with the occasion to cultivate social and leadership aptitudes.
Jake Dilts, the Assistant Program Coordinator, who possesses prior involvement in playing and coaching rugby, underscored the inclusivity of the sport, underscoring that “In rugby, there’s a position for you,” irrespective of physique or skill level. This programme presents an alternate option to conventional sports and affords young individuals the opportunity to engage in a sport that offers a distinct experience.
The preliminary clinics, which are currently non-contact, have piqued the interest of high school students, with the aspiration of attracting even more participants as the programme progresses. Going forward, formal training sessions and competitive matches with other high school teams from surrounding states have been outlined. The ultimate objective is to cultivate a formidable team and potentially introduce similar programmes for high school girls and younger children, provided that the rugby initiative proves to be successful.
The allure of rugby lies in its minimal equipment requisites, rendering it a cost-efficient and accessible sport for many. The programme will cover the outlays for rugby balls, jerseys, and other essential equipment. In comparison to football, hockey, or lacrosse, rugby opens up the opportunity for young individuals from diverse economic backgrounds to become involved in sports without encountering financial impediments.
Additionally, the initiative has garnered backing from the local community, with organisations proffering aid in the form of coaching and even scholarship prospects. Kevin Brown, the President of the Norwich Community Development Corporation, secured two scholarships from the Army Rugby Legacy Foundation for programme participants to attend West Point’s Rugby Camp this summer. This underscores the dedication of community leaders to ensure the success and expansion of the rugby programme in Norwich.
As the programme continues to attract interest and broaden its scope, the aspiration is to establish a robust and competitive team that will not only enhance the lives of the participants but also champion the sport within the Norwich community. Any individual interested in joining the rugby programme or seeking further information is urged to contact Jake Dilts at 860-823-3791 or via email at [email protected].
With the inauguration of this novel rugby programme, Norwich is affording teenagers opportunities to partake in a dynamic and inclusive sport, whilst nurturing companionship and personal advancement within the community.
