The Indiana State men’s basketball team recently hosted their fifth annual Blackout Cancer game, where they were able to raise an impressive £10,317.14 for the Rich and Robin Porter Cancer Research Center during their successful match against Drake University.
On February 3, fans had the opportunity to learn more about the Rich and Robin Porter Cancer Research Center, a state-of-the-art facility established in 2020 through a generous donation from Indiana State University alumni. This centre, which is a part of the College of Arts and Sciences, is dedicated to training the next generation of cancer researchers and becoming a global leader in the fight against cancer.
Dr. Deborah Curtis, President of Indiana State University, expressed her gratitude, stating, “All of us at Indiana State University want to extend our thanks to everyone who contributed to funding cancer research at Indiana State’s Rich and Robin Porter Cancer Research Center. This cutting-edge facility, led by our exceptional faculty, staff, and students, is making a significant impact, and the support of each individual truly matters. We look forward to continuing this tradition next year.”
In addition to the funds generated from ticket sales and donations, the Rich and Robin Porter Cancer Research Center received an additional £5,000 in matching funding from Rich and Robin Porter, bringing the total raised to over £10,000.
Dr. Takuya Akiyama, Director of the Porter Cancer Research Center, underscored the significance of the fundraising efforts, stating, “Through our partnership with Sycamore Athletics, we have made it convenient for attendees to support this vital cause. Our goal is to eradicate cancer entirely, thanks to the research conducted at the Center and by Alumni at other institutions.”
The Blackout Cancer game is part of an ongoing series of events aimed at raising funds for cancer research and care. The upcoming game on February 24 against UIC will raise funds for Riley Hospital for Children in Indianapolis, where fans are encouraged to wear black to the game.
