The University of Lynchburg Men’s Basketball Team Dominates Averett on Senior Day

The men’s basketball team at the University of Lynchburg achieved a notable 77-58 victory over Averett last Saturday afternoon, culminating in an impressive 20 unanswered points. The event was dedicated to acknowledging the graduating class of 2024 and graduate student Cameron O’Conner.

Senior Matt Johnson made a significant impact at the beginning of the game, securing the opening basket for the Hornets with a 3-pointer. This marked his initial career start, during which he also obtained two rebounds and additional points within the opening minutes.

Lynchburg maintained a lead throughout the game, with the largest advantage of eight points in the first half, achieved after a jumper by Jonathan Foust with 5:31 left to play. Foust concluded the game with four points and five rebounds. Furthermore, the team saw the emergence of four double-digit scorers, with senior Jordan Parham leading with 14 points, followed by Piercen Young with 13, and Kavon James and Jayson Easton contributing 12 each.

Despite Lynchburg’s strong performance, the Cougars managed a significant comeback, trailing by only two points at halftime. Their momentum carried into the second half, compelling the Hornets to mount their own comeback.

Trailing by four points with 8:52 remaining in the game, Lynchburg reversed the tide by scoring 20 consecutive points, effectively shutting down the Cougars. As the Hornets held their opponents scoreless for the remainder of the contest, several players made pivotal shots, including Easton with a pair of 3-pointers, Foust with an alley-oop off the glass from Easton, and James concluding the game with a one-hand slam in transition following a steal from Miles Taylor. This remarkable 23-point run secured Lynchburg’s first victory in eight games.

With a record of 11-14 (6-10 ODAC), the Hornets eagerly anticipate the announcement of the ODAC tournament bracket to determine their next opponent and venue on Monday, February 19.
