The Unseen Struggle Behind Tennis Glory: Djokovic Team Member’s Heart Attack Revealed

The realm of professional tennis is frequently perceived by spectators as glamorous, action-packed, and exciting. However, behind the scenes, the intense stress that accompanies full-time travel on the ATP Tour can have devastating consequences. This reality was recently illustrated within Novak Djokovic’s team, as Miljan Amanovic, his long-standing physiotherapist, suffered a “severe heart attack” due to the stress of constant travel.

The incident, which occurred in 2017 and necessitated Amanovic to be resuscitated four times, has been revealed in a new book titled ‘Novak Djokovic: The greatest of all time’, authored by Dominic Bliss. This book, scheduled for release on February 29, delves into the Serbian tennis legend’s journey to sporting greatness and provides insight into the personal challenges encountered by key team members.

Amanovic has been an indispensable part of Djokovic’s team since 2007, demonstrating commendable dedication and expertise. In 2017, amidst a period of upheaval where Djokovic made significant changes to his support team, Amanovic ceased working alongside him. It was during that same year that the physiotherapist’s health took a critical turn due to the strain of constant travel on the tennis tour. His harrowing heart attack and subsequent recovery serve as a stark reminder of the silent struggles experienced by the individuals who help make tennis champions’ success possible.

Fortunately, Amanovic made a full recovery but has since chosen to reduce his workload as a travelling physiotherapist. Nevertheless, he continues to support Djokovic at selected tournaments and has even taken on a new role at the Novak Tennis Centre in Belgrade. Djokovic expressed his delight at Amanovic accepting this role, emphasising the importance of his contribution to the team.

During the 2023 Australian Open, where Djokovic clinched a historic 10th title despite contending with a hamstring injury, he openly acknowledged Amanovic’s significance in his career. Describing Amanovic as one of the closest individuals in his life, Djokovic expressed gratitude for the physiotherapist’s unwavering support and dedication.

Looking ahead, Djokovic is expected to make his return at the Indian Wells Masters next month following his defeat at the 2024 Australian Open. Despite his recent setback, the tennis world looks forward to witnessing his continued resilience and skill on the court.

This eye-opening revelation serves as a poignant reminder that, behind every victorious athlete, there are dedicated individuals who undergo immense personal sacrifices. Amanovic’s story shines a light on the hidden struggles behind tennis glory, reminding fans and spectators of the extraordinary resilience and commitment displayed by the teams behind their favourite tennis icons.
