Larry Briggs, the esteemed hockey coach and recruiting coordinator for the PennWest California hockey team, is defying expectations as he marks his 70th birthday today. Despite reaching this significant milestone, he persists in donning his skates and taking to the ice, firmly demonstrating that age is merely a numerical figure.
Briggs’ deep-rooted passion for hockey predates the existence of the Pittsburgh Penguins. His formative years were spent engaging in pickup games on frozen ponds in Clairton alongside childhood companions. As time progressed, he perpetuated his ardor for the sport by participating in various adult and organized men’s leagues, including the Pittsburgh Hockey League for the Clairton Canucks.
During his tenure as the Scouting and Recruiting Coordinator for the California Vulcans Hockey Club, which spans over a decade, Briggs has not only nurtured budding talent but has also actively competed on the ice himself. Notably, he established his own team, Team Monkey Bar, assuming the roles of player-coach and general manager since 2012. The team comprises individuals whom he has coached, competed against, and enlisted to play at PennWest California.
What distinguishes Briggs from his contemporaries is his frequently contending against significantly younger opponents. Nevertheless, he remains resolute and continues to demonstrate his prowess and athleticism in each match. While he principally contends with individuals around the age of 30, he also takes to the ice with peers in other leagues.
Remarkably, Briggs partakes in an impressive two to three games per week, underscoring his unswerving devotion to the sport. Beyond regular league fixtures, he had the unique privilege of participating in a 70+ tournament with the GeriHatricks hockey club based in Maryland last March. Moreover, he consistently participates in the annual SlapShot Cup Tournament in Johnstown, PA, competing in the 60+ division.
Without any indication of slowing down, Briggs eagerly anticipates perpetuating his dominance on the hockey rink and aspires to be acknowledged as the oldest hockey player in the Pittsburgh area. His unwavering resolve, fervor, and dedication to the sport are truly commendable, serving as a source of inspiration to both young and seasoned players alike.
As Larry Briggs commemorates his 70th birthday, his remarkable odyssey in the realm of hockey stands as a testament to the enduring nature of passion. His steadfast dedication and affection for the game continue to inspire those in his midst, and his presence on the ice epitomises the maxim “age is just a number”. Here’s to many future years of witnessing Larry Briggs’ continued brilliance on the hockey rink!
