Greenfield’s Bid for 4th Championship Halted by Taconic in Semifinals

The Greenfield hockey team, a three-time consecutive winner of the Western Massachusetts titles, faced a formidable opponent in the thrilling semifinal round against Taconic. Despite establishing a 2-0 lead in the first period, Taconic staged a remarkable comeback to secure a 4-2 victory, thereby clinching their place in the PVIAC Class B final.

Currently boasting an overall record of 11-8-1, Greenfield eagerly anticipates the release of the state tournament brackets by the MIAA this coming weekend. Meanwhile, Taconic, with a record of 7-9-3, awaits their opponent in the upcoming Class B final, which will be either Ludlow or Southwick.

Adam Bouchard, Greenfield’s coach, was quick to commend Taconic for their exceptional execution of the game plan, as well as the outstanding performance of their goalie, Cameron Laferriere, who made an impressive 40 saves during the game. Despite numerous opportunities during a 5-on-3 power play in the final minutes, Greenfield was unable to capitalize, ultimately leading to Taconic’s triumph.

The game saw an unforeseen turn of events, with Cody Soper of Taconic scoring just nine seconds into the second period, followed closely by a goal from Dom Velasco. This swift turnaround ultimately led to the overturning of Greenfield’s lead, culminating in Taconic’s late power play goal and securing their place in the Class B final.

Despite an impressive 2-0 lead after the first period, Greenfield was outmaneuvered by Taconic’s remarkable comeback and defensive strategy. Matt Risley, Taconic’s coach, lauded goalie Cameron Laferriere for his exceptional performance and pivotal role in securing the team’s victory.

Greenfield’s surprise failure to convert on the 5-on-3 power play is notable, considering their usual success rate of around 46% on the power play throughout the season. However, Taconic’s formidable defensive play and exceptional goaltending ultimately proved decisive in the game.

Although experiencing a setback, Coach Adam Bouchard of Greenfield acknowledged the necessity for renewed energy and determination in future games. Bouchard also recognised the strength of Taconic’s game plan and their outstanding execution on the ice.

In conclusion, while the Greenfield hockey team fell short in their quest for a 4th consecutive championship, their legacy and prowess on the ice remain indisputable. Taconic’s remarkable comeback and defensive strategy enabled them to secure a well-deserved victory, setting the stage for an exciting showdown in the upcoming Class B final.
