Mixed martial arts, commonly known as MMA, is often associated with professional cage matches and the UFC. However, in Sheffield, a unique project led by Mark Hollett from Sheffield Hallam University is using MMA as a tool to combat issues such as drug and alcohol addiction, unemployment, and most importantly, homelessness.
The one-hour-a-week MMA class at Sheffield Shootfighters Mixed Martial Arts Club is making a significant impact on the lives of individuals. The project works closely with national services such as Shelter and the NHS, as well as local groups like Mind Body Connect, Nomad, Depaul, and Project 6, to provide individuals with the opportunity to use martial arts to transform their lives.
For Chris Royston, these classes have been a life-changing experience. After experiencing homelessness back in 2015, he now resides in a bungalow and is fundraising to support the charities that once aided him. The support network of the MMA class has provided him with a solid foundation to turn his life around.
Researcher Mark Hollett, along with coach Liam Smedley, has been conducting this project not only to transform lives but also to further his PhD research in collaboration with Mind Body Connect. Their aim was to introduce various martial arts disciplines and assess their impact on individuals who were homeless or at risk of homelessness.
Freddie Lee, whose life was in a downward spiral due to an abusive relationship, found a new direction after attending the MMA classes. He has since secured a home and employment, with the MMA class providing the much-needed foundation for this positive change in his life.
Even individuals like Owen, who initially had reservations about martial arts, have found solace and strength in the MMA classes. These sessions have not only transformed his mindset but also his physical and mental wellbeing.
Two women, Samantha Critchley and Emily, who have overcome drug addiction and are now employed as support workers for people in recovery, have been empowered and transformed by the MMA classes. These women found newfound strength and purpose through their participation in the classes.
It is evident that MMA has become much more than just a physical activity; it has become a lifeline for individuals who were battling homelessness and addiction.
In today’s society, where the cost of living crisis is contributing to the rise in homelessness, innovative and creative approaches such as MMA classes are crucial. They not only provide a form of physical activity but also a source of support, empowerment, and community for those who need it the most.
The success stories from this project are a testament to the fact that unconventional methods such as mixed martial arts can have a significant impact on individuals who are facing adverse circumstances. By using MMA as a vehicle for change, lives are being transformed, and hope is being restored.
The battle against homelessness is ongoing, and it is heartening to see projects like this making a real difference in the lives of those who need it the most. Perhaps, more initiatives like this are needed to tackle the growing issue of homelessness in our communities.
