The Cony co-op hockey program has faced a myriad of obstacles in recent years. However, the winter season has proved to be transformative for the Rams, as they have experienced a notable turnaround.
Under the guidance of first-year coach Doug Dieuveuil, the team, composed of players from various schools such as Hall-Dale, Monmouth, Richmond, Erskine, and Maranacook, has secured a No. 2 seed in the Class B North playoffs. Their current record of 13-5-0 reflects a remarkable improvement from previous seasons.
The Rams will host the No. 7 team, Brewer/Lawrence/Skowhegan, in a regional quarterfinal game. With a series of victories, including a 6-3 triumph over their upcoming opponents, Cony co-op appears to be in high spirits and prepared for the challenge.
Leading the charge for the Rams is Cooper Clark, with 25 points, closely followed by Zack Waddell with 22 points and Ben Platt with 20 points. Goalie Landon Foster has also been a pivotal player with a 2.80 goals against average and a .892 save percentage.
Meanwhile, the top-seeded Messalonskee (14-4-0) is poised to play No. 8 Old Town/Orono in their own quarterfinal game. Having won eight of their last nine games, the team’s head coach, Dennis Martin, exudes confidence in the team’s depth and ability to perform under pressure. Notably, Owen Kirk leads the Eagles in scoring with 47 points, while the team’s defense is securely anchored by Grayson Podey and Bjorn Brickett.
Both teams appear to be cognizant of the challenges that lie ahead, with Coach Martin emphasizing the need to remain focused and not underestimate any opponent.
As the playoffs approach, it is evident that both teams are motivated and prepared. It surely promises to be an enthralling match-up as Cony and Messalonskee gear up to face their rivals in the B North quarterfinal showdowns.
