The Minot High boys hockey team concluded their participation in the North Dakota State High School Activities Association state hockey tournament with an impressive third-place finish, defeating Fargo South-Shanley Bruins 5-2 at the Scheels Arena. Under the leadership of head coach Jason Bennett, the team rebounded from a challenging semifinal loss and delivered a strong performance to claim the bronze medal.
Coach Bennett initially expressed concerns about the team’s performance in the first period, stating that it appeared as though they were “going through the motions.” However, the players regrouped and managed to regain their footing in the second period, ultimately overcoming a 2-0 deficit. Junior Aidan Diehl’s goal, assisted by senior Jersey Abrahamson, sparked the team’s resurgence and marked a shift in momentum.
The team continued to press forward, with senior Jaxon Rdke finding the net with an assist from junior Finlee Bentz and sophomore Cole Richeson, levelling the game at 2-2. Senior Blays Ostrom delivered exceptional goaltending throughout the second and third periods, making crucial saves to keep the team in contention.
Junior Mackley Morelli emerged as a key player in the third period, scoring a goal at the 7:16 mark with assistance from sophomore Ryan Roteliuk and Bentz. Shortly after, Bentz secured a goal of his own with assists from Roteliuk and Rdke. Morelli found the net once again, with Abrahamson notching his second assist of the game to seal the victory for Minot High.
Coach Bennett commended the team’s resilience and determination, stating, “Our goal was to make it past the quarterfinals this year. The last time we got past the quarterfinals was in 2017, so it has been a bit, and we were pleased with how well we played except for a minute or two in the semifinal game. We know we can compete with the schools in the east.”
Minot High’s achievement is particularly noteworthy as they were the only team from the west to progress beyond the quarterfinal stage of the tournament, showcasing their talent and ability to thrive in high-pressure situations.
The team’s success at the state tournament serves as a testament to their hard work and dedication, undoubtedly making their school and community proud. As they celebrate their well-earned third-place finish, the Minot High boys hockey team can look towards the future with confidence and optimism.
